Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my career."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the main draw.

The tournament indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
