The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.
