UK and France Will Dispatch Troops to the Country if a Peace Deal is Reached

Placeholder Diplomatic Meeting

The London and Paris have signed a statement of purpose concerning the stationing of troops in the nation in the event a ceasefire be struck with Moscow, the Prime Minister of Britain, Keir Starmer, has declared.

After discussions with allied nations in Paris, he indicated that the two nations would "establish operational bases across Ukraine and construct fortified structures for military hardware and military equipment" to deter any future incursion.

The partner countries also proposed that the America would take the lead in overseeing a ceasefire.

The Kremlin has consistently cautioned that any non-Ukrainian military in Ukraine would be considered a "valid objective", but has not yet commented on this new development.

Background and Continuing Hostilities

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, and Russia currently holds approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory.

"This constitutes a crucial element of our vow to stand with Ukraine for the duration," stated the British leader.

Top officials and top officials from the "Coalition of the Willing" took part in the Paris negotiations.

Addressing reporters at a combined announcement, he noted: "It establishes the framework for the operational parameters under which allied and coalition forces could operate on Ukrainian soil, defending Ukraine's air and maritime domains, and restoring Ukraine's military for the years ahead."

The British leader also stated that the UK would be involved in any Washington-directed verification of a potential ceasefire.

Security Guarantees and Diplomatic Positions

Top US negotiator Steve Witkoff stated that "long-term defense assurances and strong economic promises are critical to a permanent resolution" in Ukraine – referring to a key condition made by the Ukrainian government.

He said the coalition had "largely finished" their work on establishing such guarantees "to ensure the Ukrainian people know that when this conflict ends, it ends permanently."

Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's advisor, also was involved in the negotiations.

Separately, President Macron Emmanuel Macron declared that Ukraine's allies had made "significant advances" at the negotiations.

He added that "strong" security guarantees for the Ukrainian government had been reached in the event of a potential truce.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented that a "major development" had been made in the negotiations, but added that he would only deem efforts to be "adequate" if they culminated in the end of the conflict.

Earlier, Zelensky said a peace deal was "mostly finalized". Settling the outstanding 10% would "determine the fate of the peace, the future of Ukraine and Europe".

Unresolved Issues

  • Sovereign soil and defense assurances have been at the center of ongoing disputes for diplomats.
  • Putin has often said that Kyiv's military must withdraw from all of Ukraine's eastern Donbas or Russia will seize it, dismissing any compromise over how to end the war.
  • Kyiv has thus far excluded ceding any territory, but has floated the idea that Ukraine could move its troops to an designated point – but only if Russia reciprocates.

Moscow presently holds about 75% of the Donetsk region and around 99% of the adjacent Luhansk region. The areas form the heartland of Donbas.

The initial US-led multi-point proposal that was circulated to the media last year was viewed by Kyiv and its European allies as being heavily skewed in Moscow's direction.

This sparked weeks of high-level diplomacy – with all sides trying to amend the proposal.

Recently, The Ukrainian government sent the US an updated 20-point plan – as well as distinct documents describing possible defense assurances and provisions for Ukraine's rebuilding, the President stated.
