In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract for the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The contract features a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside salaries of $16 million for the upcoming season and $17M for the 2027 year.

Notably, Murakami's compensation may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:

• A seven-figure bonus for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
• Half a million dollars for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
• $250K for finishing fourth through 10th.
• An identical bonus for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

His deal includes that he will not be optioned to the minors without his approval and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the contract. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.

Compensation and Historical Context

As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a 15% cut of any triggered salary escalators.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth player from Japan to suit up for the White Sox, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 on February 2nd, enters a young core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, eclipsing the all-time record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's coveted Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was shortened to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite recording 64 Ks, he batted .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing primarily at first, he has since transitioned to third.

Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a come-from-behind one-run win. The following day in the title match against the Team USA, he blasted a equalizing homer in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's eventual title triumph.
