An extensive manufacturing zone situated on the outskirts of the capital is addressing radioactive contamination following a government team detected presence of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two production plants inside the site, that encompasses companies shipping frozen marine products.

This discovery has triggered immediate decontamination efforts and the relocation of local inhabitants, following a comparable pollution scare in the United States that was traced back to the Indonesian facilities.

A major international retailer is one of the companies that have withdrawn products from its stores after the discovery.

Probe and Detection of Contamination

Indonesian authorities launched an investigation when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a shipment of chilled coated prawns exported by an Indonesian firm.

The FDA issued an advisory instructing suppliers and sellers to discard the goods and avoid selling it, even though the detected amount was well under the agency's action limit. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an acute risk to consumers.

The authority stated: “The primary impact on health of concern after longer term, repeated low dose exposure (for example through consumption of contaminated food or liquid over time) is an increased chance of cancer, caused by damage to DNA within body cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Checks

Radiation tests revealed at least 22 plants in the industrial zone were contaminated. The official taskforce did not identify the 21 other production sites, but said they would promptly receive decontamination processes carried out by the country's nuclear authority.

The environment minister stated that people living in strongly contaminated zones would be moved until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the well-being of the residents was the “top priority”.

Health officials additionally conducted examinations on nearby workers and people living near the industrial estate, identifying 9 people who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. They were sent to a hospital before being allowed to return home.

Decontamination and Containment Plans

The contaminated sites will immediately undergo cleanup procedures by the national nuclear institute. Officials have also selected the area of a recycled metal factory as an isolation facility for contaminated goods.

Indonesia, which operates no atomic power plants or arms program, believes that Caesium-137 may have entered the country from overseas.

Origin of Contamination and Trade Restrictions

A taskforce representative told the media that recycled metal imports were the likely cause of pollution and announced the authorities would promptly enforce restrictions on scrap metal arrivals. It was stated that transport were also being inspected for potential contamination as they traveled through the region.

Regarding Caesium-137 and Health Concerns

Caesium-137 is a hazardous radioactive element that usually appears in the environment as a result of nuclear testing or incidents, like the Fukushima disaster or Chernobyl. Trace quantities are found in soil, food and the atmosphere.
