One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
