NY Launches Portal for Citizens to Share ICE Images Following Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state attorney general has launched a new digital platform encouraging residents to submit images and footage of immigration raids across New York. This action comes just a shortly after a major immigration operation shook NYC's Chinatown, sparking mass outcry.
US Citizens Arrested During Enforcement Action
A congressional representative disclosed during a news conference that four citizens were arrested and detained for "almost a full day" following Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations erupted in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen is entitled to exist without intimidation," the attorney general wrote in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and captured immigration enforcement yesterday, I urge you to submit that evidence with us. We are dedicated to assessing these submissions and investigating any violations of law."
Submission Process
The portal provides spaces to upload visual evidence of the raid, plus a section to indicate location information. Before submitting, individuals must mark a box that acknowledges that "the attorney general might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, including in a court case or government document."
Details of the Chinatown Raid
The enforcement action, which onlookers say involved dozens of federal agents, occurred in a well-known district of NYC where fake products and merchandise are sold daily en masse – frequently to tourists.
Recordings of Tuesday's raid depict multiple masked and armed officers zip-tying and detaining a man, and pushing back onlookers. Crowds of New Yorkers followed the agents along the roads. An armored truck was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Leadership Statements
During a midweek briefing featuring the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a Democrat, stated that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be arrested for unjustly." He noted the persons were let go on the following day with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," he said. "This is a armed campaign to incite tension. It is purely a pretext to incite violence for the government to deploy the military to stop conflict that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the ICE raid escalated – all three political contenders denounced the incident, including NY's governor.
"Once again, the Trump administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, rather than security. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.
NYC advocacy organizations expressed outrage too.
"ICE raided the neighborhood with tactical trucks, masked agents and protective equipment to go after street vendors attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to public safety and was entirely about intimidating residents and neighborhoods," said the president of a rights organization.
Agency Rules
Official guidelines forbids the holding of citizens and the agency has claimed it will not arrest or detain citizens. However, external research has revealed that over 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities since the start of the current administration.
Recent Pattern
ICE raids have been rising in frequency in the state and across the US this year.
A mid-October raid in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the present government. Demonstrations targeting ICE are commonplace as are allegations of aggression and abusive practices.
Latest, a letter provided by legal entities claimed inadequate care of women with child in detention centers.
