McKenna's Stance on The Scottish Club

The Ipswich boss described Celtic as "a really big soccer institution" but emphasized he is "in the middle" of a "extensive rebuilding" with the Championship side.

The mid-thirties assumed control of Portman Road in recent years and led them to the English top flight with back-to-back promotions, but they managed only four games last season as they were relegated back to the Championship and they presently occupy 12th in the Championship.

"There have been such discussions," the English capital native former Northern Ireland youth international said when asked about being on Celtic's shortlist.

"It's not something I have given any thought to, or where any part of my concentration is currently.

"I possess a special position here at a remarkable club. And we're at a really important phase of the season. Anything external hasn't touched my radar."

Context and Contractual Aspects

Reports indicate that McKenna would be willing to talk to Celtic given his boyhood allegiances.

"During youth, we all have our affinities," he said when questioned about these. "It's unlikely everyone has to publicly and announce what they used to be, but of course it's a massive sports organization."

McKenna signed a new four-year contract in 2024 and was questioned about his reported buyout clause.

"In every manager's contract, there are things," he responded. "I'm unaware what my specific terms are and, if I did, I wouldn't disclose you anyway!

"I tackle this job like I will remain Town's coach forever. I know that's not always going to be the situation, but I'll always give maximum effort as while I am here."

The Welsh Coach's Position

The former striker represented Celtic on loan from Newcastle United in 2005, but the former Welsh striker is minded to finish the ongoing World Cup qualification, a position that would effectively rule out the 46-year-old from assuming the Celtic job.

Wales are presently third in their World Cup group behind group toppers Belgium and runners-up North Macedonia.

Wins over the minnows and their rivals in November would secure their position in the final qualifying round, but they are virtually guaranteed of reaching that stage, due to a successful European competition performance, should they fail to end up Group J second place.

Considering his present position, the Wales manager, whose agreement concludes after Euro 2028, would not be available until after the play-offs at the earliest.
