My feeling was I got a touch - Alex Carey on review reprieve.

Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he thought he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on review during day one of the third Ashes Test versus England.

Having been given a life on 72, Carey crafted a fine 106 to guide the Australians finish on 326-8 at the stumps in the Adelaide Oval.

The Key Moment

Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey looked to play a cut shot to seamer Josh Tongue.

The England team lodged a strong appeal, thinking they had heard an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

Following captain Ben Stokes challenged the on-field call, the footage examined by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a spike although this appeared before the ball had made contact with the bat.

Gaffaney also said he was of the opinion there was a clearance between bat and ball.

Consequently, Carey was allowed to continue.

"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," commented Carey.

"If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently. There was a definite noise."

Technology Debate

Discussion has swirled about 'the sound wave technology' during the Ashes contest after a series of dubious moments.

Bowling coach David Saker hinted England may pursue this latest incident further with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's the situation."

A Special Hundred

Carey's century was his maiden in the Ashes.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father passed away in recent months. Carey's wife was emotional in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by glancing upward.

"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," said Carey.

"The reason for my look upwards is clear. I'm trying not to tear up. But, no, it was great."

History of Controversy

Carey has been at the centre of Ashes debate before.

He was the keeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 series, leading to a febrile final day.

Speaking about his survival he continued: "The technology clearly wasn't synchronized. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."

"I might have gotten away with one."
