The most severe projected effects of the climate emergency for the UK have been detailed by scientists, including a searing 4C increase in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in ocean levels. A separate possibility foresees a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and power requirements.

Possible Extremes, Not Guarantees

These effects, some of which are connected to irreversible climate shifts, are considered as low probability but plausible. The researchers stated that these projections filled a gap in planning that had left the UK not ready for worst-case results.

"The severe weather events we have outlined aren’t predictions, but they are possible," stated the lead researcher who oversaw the research. "Britain has been planning without the frameworks to plan for catastrophic outcomes.
