Long-Forgotten Johann Sebastian Bach Compositions Played for First-Ever Performance in 320 Years
Recently identified organ compositions by the renowned composer Bach have been revealed and executed in the central European country for the initial occasion in three hundred twenty years.
The country's Culture Minister the cultural official described the finding of the two pieces a "great moment for the global music scene".
They initially attracted notice of Peter Wollny in 1992 when he was organizing historical musical documents at the Royal Library of Belgium.
The organ works - the Chaconne composition in D minor and Chaconne in G minor - were undated and without attribution. Mr Wollny spent the subsequent thirty years working to verify the authorship of the pieces.
Landmark Presentation
They were performed at the St Thomas Church in Leipzig, where Bach is interred and where he worked as a music director for twenty-seven years.
The compositions were played by Dutch musician Ton Koopman, who said he was proud to be able to play them for the first time in over three centuries.
He said the pieces were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "an important addition for organists today, as they are also suitable for reduced-scale organs".
Cultural Relevance
They are believed to have been composed early in Bach's career, when he was serving as an organ instructor in the town of the Thuringian town in the German region.
Mr Wollny, who is now the head of the Bach research center in the city, said they exhibited several features distinctive to the artist.
"Musically, the compositions also include elements that can be identified in Bach's compositions from this period, but not in those of any other composer," he said.
They are believed to have been transcribed in 1705 by a student of Bach, the historical figure.
At a unveiling of the pieces, Mr Wollny said he was "99.99% sure that the composer had created the two compositions" and they have now been added into the official catalogue of his musical output.
