Powerful cold-season winds caused walls to collapse upon fragile tents sheltering Palestinians displaced by war in Gaza, killing at least four individuals. These deaths underscores the perilous situation that continue after over two years of intense airstrikes and critical lack of aid.

Truce Provides Little Respite from Severe Elements

While a ceasefire has been in effect from last fall, aid groups state that residents do not have the sufficient shelter required to survive recurring winter storms.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which took in the victims, reported on this week that the deceased include two women, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry stated on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of hypothermia during the night.

"International actors has allowed us to experience loss of life in every possible way," said a family member after the funeral. "While it is correct the bombing may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Tent Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three people of a single household — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall collapsed on top of their tent in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than 5 additional people were injured in the incident.

Family members on that day started clearing the debris that had entombed their family and reconstructing the temporary homes for survivors.

Humanitarian Efforts and Ongoing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were distributing tents, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and sanitation supplies throughout Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of the population reside in improvised tents because their homes were turned into ruins during the war. Humanitarian organizations say not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

Fatality Figures Since the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, part of the administration, reports more than four hundred and forty people have been killed by gunfire and their bodies taken to hospitals after the truce went into effect. The authority keeps detailed casualty data that are considered largely accurate by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on Tuesday that at least one hundred children under the age of 18 – sixty boys and 40 females – had been killed after the truce started because of military operations, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, tank shelling and use of live ammunition. Those figures, he explained, reflected cases where sufficient details had been compiled to justify recording, but the overall count is expected to be higher. He added that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'bombings and shootings have decreased' under the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed reporters at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video from the Strip. "So what the international community now calls calm would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Another Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than 2 million individuals has been fighting to fend off the freezing temperatures and storms away while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently required during the colder season. It’s the third cold season since the war between the state and the group started on 7 October 2023, when militants stormed into Israeli territory and murdered approximately twelve hundred individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.
