Disaster Strikes as Unintentional Explosion at Law Enforcement Facility in Indian-administered Kashmir Takes Nine Deaths
A catastrophic explosion at a police station in Indian-administered Kashmir has led to the deaths of nine people and wounding to thirty-two additional people, according to official statements.
The occurrence happened when a collection of confiscated explosives inadvertently exploded during processing activities.
Chronology of Events
The detonation happened on Friday evening at the Nowgam police station, where explosive materials confiscated in Faridabad region in the northern province of Haryana state were being stored temporarily.
Local security director declared that the blast materials were awaiting technical investigation when a "deeply regrettable" incident during processing caused their blast at approximately 11:20 PM local.
Official Statements
Police authorities verified that this was an "accidental detonation" and rather than a terrorist attack. "Different conjectures regarding the cause of this event is unneeded," highlighted the law enforcement head during a journalist meeting.
The security post suffered significant harm from the blast, with adjacent buildings also being affected by the powerful blast.
Consequences and Fatalities
Multiple vehicles were "consumed by fire and transformed into ashen remains, with debris scattered across the location," according to official reports.
"The intensity of the blast was such that some body parts were recovered from close-by residences, approximately 100-200 metres away the security post," stated an authority informant.
Most of the fatalities were law enforcement personnel, along with scientific examination staff, two investigative imaging experts, and a tailor who was present with the personnel.
Administration Response
The territory's Lieutenant Governor conveyed condolences and declared that an investigation had been directed into the catastrophic occurrence.
"I have commissioned a inquiry to ascertain the cause of the inadvertent detonation. Extremely pained by the loss of precious lives due to extremely tragic accidental blast at Nowgam police station in Srinagar. My condolences to the mourning loved ones. I pray for speedy recovery of the wounded," stated the authority on digital platforms.
