Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
