American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said travel would be held up due to a lack of workers - one of the highest after the closure began.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in history.

He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," the official said.
