A comprehensive search and rescue operation is presently under way in the Caribbean Sea for two missing sailing vessels loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Maritime Search Efforts Deployed

Mexico has deployed naval assets and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were transporting at least 9 personnel, as stated by a navy statement.

The boats had been scheduled to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.

Context of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through widespread power outages across the country.

"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and the two ships are equipped with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort said.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is co-operating fully with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Previous Relief Shipment

Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and officially received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That vessel, dubbed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the yacht in which Castro returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.

Wider International Backdrop

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the island nation came into effect.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" supply shortages, with over 50,000 operations called off in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Diplomatic pressure have intensified over the past months, with comments from various representatives highlighting the complex situation regarding relations.

Responding to recent proposals, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations had begun, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities said it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to discover the sailboats and secure the well-being of the crews.

As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
