‘A Man Who Will Be Deeply Missed’: Meg Ryan Shares Emotional Homage to Rob Reiner
The actress Meg Ryan has shared a moving homage to the departed filmmaker Rob Reiner, who directed her in the beloved romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.
A Tragic Discovery
Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his spouse, Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Los Angeles at the weekend.
“Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle [sic], for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales, and in laughter. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country.”
Legal Proceedings Unfold
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, is accused of two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being incarcerated with no bail set. Sources state that Reiner’s daughter Romy found her father’s body.
“It is my belief that from this horror, positive change and understanding can emerge,” Ryan added. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”
A Statement from Siblings
Reiner’s other children Jake and Romy shared a statement today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Peers Pay Their Respects
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, similarly honored Reiner with a statement shared yesterday alongside tributes from Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His skill for comedy was unmatched, his ear for dialogue perfect, and his dramatic precision was sheer elegance,” it read. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. Freedom was his key offering. He listened to ideas and included you in the creative journey. Everyone felt like part of a crew. His direction was a gift, but his legacy is broader.”
A Storied Career
When Harry Met Sally was a hit with both critics and audiences in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and scoring Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner was introduced to Michele Singer Reiner while making When Harry Met Sally. The pair were brought together by Barry Sonnenfeld, a director and friend.
Reiner’s notable filmography featured classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were married for 36 years.
